Cows speak #12 : Cells and Mastitis

Event06/08/2020

Mastitis around calving time impacts the behaviour of your animals!

This animal calved unaided on May 25. She was therefore reintegrated into the cow herd and is milking with a relatively high production. In terms of feeding behaviour, this animal has kept consistent feeding and rumination times.

5 days after calving, an alert was sent out for a fall in rumination, coupled with a fall in feed intake time.

At the same time, behavioural indicators were not good with a lying time that had fallen. The cow was therefore in extreme discomfort.

At the evening milking one quarter was slightly swollen, and production was normal.

The next morning, she had clinical mastitis. The farmer therefore proceeded with an adapted treatment and followed her remission thanks to Feed'Live.

Despite her recovery, this cow fell in milk and was not cured. It would surely have been judicious to make a more thorough clinical examination at the first alert to intervene more quickly.

Freshly calved cows are very sensitive, and their behaviour is indicative of discomfort. You need to be very reactive!
